2019 AMA’s Breakdown

The 2019 American Music Awards were last night, and in case you couldn’t stay up all night to catch the show, here are some of the big winners on the night:

Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift

As anticipated, Taylor Swift stole the show, and picked up one of her 6 awards on the night by winning Artist of the Year. She edged Halsey, Post Malone, Ariana Grande & Drake.

Album of the Year (Soul/R&B): Free Spirit – Khalid

Tight race, but Khalid beat Ella Mai’s self-titled album and Chris Brown’s “Indigo” in this category.

Album of the Year (Pop/Rock): Lover – Taylor Swift

Another tight race (she was put against Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” and Billie Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”)

Album of the Year (Rap/Hip-Hop): Hollywood’s Bleeding – Post Malone

Post Malone’s extremely popular album beat Championships and ASTROWORLD by Meek Mill and Travis Scott respectively as America’s favorite Rap/Hip-Hop album. Personally, I was shocked.

New Artist: Billie Eilish

In another category full of potential winners (Luke Combs, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Ella Mai), Billie Eilish came out on top.

Rap/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year: Cardi B

Cardi B is continuing what’s proving to be another great year for her. She beat Post Malone and Drake to this one.

Female Pop/Rock Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift

Thought Ariana Grande & Billie Eilish would beat Taylor? You thought wrong.

Male Pop/Rock Artist of the Year: Khalid

Up against Post Malone and Drake, America chose Khalid.

Pop/Rock Duo or Group of the Year: BTS

We all love the Jonas Brothers and Panic! at the Disco, but are they loved more than the 7 guys who make the K-Pop boy band we call BTS? The answer is no.

Best Soundtrack: Bohemian Rhapsody: The Original Soundtrack – Queen

The cult classic beat “A Star is Born” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“.

Social Artist of the Year: BTS

You bet. The K-Pop boy band beat Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and EXO.

Male Soul/R&B Artist of the Year – Bruno Mars

Shocking that Bruno managed to beat Chris Breezy and Khalid in this category.

Alternative Rock Artist of the Year – Billie Eilish

The 17 year old phenomenon won this award over Panic! at the Disco and Imagine Dragons.

Adult Contemporary Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift

The Taylor Swift show continued. On this episode, she beat P!nk and Maroon 5.

Rap/Hip-Hop Song of the Year: Old Town Road (Remix) – Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus

No shockers here. “SICKO MODE” by Travis Scott and “Wow.” by Post Malone didn’t stand a chance.

Pop/Rock Song of the Year: Without Me – Halsey

Good win for Halsey. She was up against some stiff competition: “Old Town Road (Remix)“, “High Hopes“, “Sunflower“, and “Sucker“.

Video of the Year: You Need to Calm Down – Taylor Swift

“Old Town Road (Remix)”, “Without Me”, “bad guy”, “7 rings”. All babies to the Giant that is Taylor Swift.

R&B/Soul Song of the Year: Talk – Khalid

Juice” by Lizzo definitely wasn’t a competitor for Khalid here. Maybe Ella Mai’s “Trip” stood a chance, but Khalid walked away with this one.

Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year: Marshmello

The smiley-faced masked DJ beat The Chainsmokers and Avicii (MHSRIP).

Collaboration of the Year: Señorita – Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello

Really tight category this one. Personally thought Lil Nas X would tak it home, but it is what it is. Other nominees: “Sunflower“, “Happier“, “Shallow“.

Tour of the Year: BTS

Yes. America still loves boy bands. Especially K-Pop ones. Elton John, Ariana Grande, P!nk, and even Ed Sheeran couldn’t take this away from our seven Korean superstars.

Female Soul/R&B Artist of the Year: Beyoncé

America still loves Queen Bey.

Latin Artist of Year: J Balvin

Thought this award had Bad Bunny written all over it, but Mr. Balvin managed to edge both Bunny and Ozuna.

Artist of the Decade: Taylor Swift

What better way to round up this post than with Taylor Swift winning ANOTHER award? Take that, Scooter Braun.
